Rare Pink Diamond to Fetch $38 million at Auction

An extremely rare pink diamond is on display in Hong Kong, and could fetch up to $38 million when it is sold at an auction in Switzerland next month.

The almost 25-carat “fancy intense pink” diamond is being sold by an anonymous private collector.

The gem, which is technically “eye clean,” has a minor flaw that is probably due to wear.

The ring is expected to be graded internally flawless after re-polishing.

The diamond was last sold by famous New York jeweler Harry Winston and is described as a classic emerald cut with gently rounded corners.

Taylor Swift: ‘Mean’ is Meant for You.

Taylor Swift won 2 Awards at the Grammy Award 2012 for Best Country Song and Best Country Performance prizes for the Platinum-selling track.

She sang her single Mean which is about being bullied. The instrument also had the words ‘Someday… I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,’ scrawled across the front, lyrics from Mean. The singer even tweaked the words of the song for her performance, singing ‘some day, i’ll be singing this at the grammys and all you’re ever gonna be is mean!’ in the chorus, which was met with cheers from the audience.

‘There’s really no feeling quite like writing a song about someone who’s completely mean to you and completely hates you, and then winning a Grammy for it,’ Taylor said as she collected her award.

When Taylor Swift took the Grammy stage with Stevie Nicks two years ago, she choked and butchered her harmonies, leading critics to question her talent. One music business blogger in particular, Bob Lefsetz, even claimed the then 20-year-old country crooner “ruined” her career with the performance.

“Now, everyone knows that Taylor Swift can’t sing,” he wrote in the scathing critique.

Surprisingly, Taylor performed her single “Mean” flawlessly, complete with a cool set, choreography and pitch pitch perfect vocals, in addition to winning two awards for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.

Well we hope Bob Lefsetz watched the show at home and wished he could take back his words from two years ago.

Taylor arrived at the awards wearing a stunning glittering cheongsam-inspired golden gown featuring a high neck cut and caplet sleeves. The beautiful blonde star wore her hair swept up in a low-key yet chic updo and a glamorous application of make-up. But for her performance of Mean, the singer went back to her country roots, slipping on a loose vintage floral dress with a petticoat peeking out from underneath and brown lace-up shoes.

More pictures and a video of Taylor’s during the Grammy Awards:

Sudirman: The Legend and Still

IT was a really hot night in mid-1985; hot in more ways than one. First, the weather was its usual balmy self, and to make that really trying, the “powers-that-be” at Universiti Kebangsaan Bangi (UKM) were making things impossible for Malaysian performer Sudirman Arshad.

The story goes that a quarter comprising ultras and Muslim fundamentalists, representatives of the student unions and academic staff , including the Dean of the Islamic faculty, were dead against his performing at the university.

For several days, Malaysian dailies were full of stories, some carrying threats that “if he dared to turn up, he would have acid thrown in his face”.

The issue was eventually and firmly resolved by the then Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad who “didn’t want any fundamentalists derailing Malaysia’s modernisation programmes in any way”.

In the afternoon, the day before the controversial concert, I had spoken with iconic Malaysian promoter and Sudirman’s manager, Mike Bernie Chin, about the affair.

“The show will start on time,” Chin said. “If you want to know who Mike Bernie Chin is, be there.”

“Why? What are you planning for tomorrow?” I had asked. “I can’t tell you. You’ll print it!”

Well ahead of time, we turned up at UKM Bangi, accompanied by pixmen, and were quite shocked at what we saw.

Grouped near the entrance were a score or more hunched ‘Sudir lookalikes’, all in his by-then famous attire — dark trench coats, black fedoras and and jet-black shades. At a silent signal, they spread out and we wondered who the protesters would fling the promised acid at. Nice one, Mr Chin.

Minutes later, two police patrol cars sped in, lights flashing, sirens at full blast. The crowd rushed to catch Sudir emerge. But, ha-ha-ha, it was another decoy. The back seat was empty!

Remembering that the show would start sharp on time, we went into the hall to watch the band set up when, at the appointed time, the opening song began with Sudir in full voice — just oh-so-naturally leaving a seat in the audience (!) and swaggering on stage. The hall went wild.

In true daring, flamboyant fashion, sensational Malaysian singing lawyer Sudirman Arshad had taken fans by storm.

The entertainer, 31 at the time, was supported by thousands at this “UKM showdown” but did not exploit the issue and was careful not to provoke the much-chagrined ultras, choosing judiciously to dress himself in the Malaysian fl ag and sing “mainly Malaysian and folksy songs”.

Japan Defeats Harimau Muda to Qualify for London Olimpics

Japan won over Harimau Muda by 4-0 during last night’s match at Stadium National Bukit Jalil.

Japan got their goals through Hiroki Sakai (36th minute), Yuya Osako (45th), Genki Haraguchi (55th) and Manabu Saito (60th) to revive their hopes of an automatic qualification for the London Olympics.

The match against Japan clearly showed up the national players’ inability to read the game and to make the right decisions at the crucial moments and that proved to be the team’s downfall.

“We opted for an attacking play after playing defensively in the first leg and it cost us dearly,” said coach Ong Kim Swee after the match.

“We had our moments but lacked the ability to make chances count. We tried to come back after going a goal down, but Japan’s second goal killed us off. We have to accept that plenty of work is needed if we are to reach the level of giants like Japan.”

Kim Swee’s men did well during the early stages of the match before the same old malaise – lack of concentration – cropped up after the half hour mark.

Watch the short video during the match:
